The Chelembra Farmers Project

Promoting Sustainable Agriculture
The Chelembra Farmers’ Project is playing a pioneering role in sustainable agriculture by fostering partnerships with local farmers through a strategy called ‘Partnership Building’. The goal is to educate local farmers in sustainable practices through knowledge exchange, resource collaboration and collective decision-making.

The project develops key skills in organic farming through a rigorous training program. This that includes manure
utilization, composting methods, use of biofertilizers and natural pest control strategies. These, and other skills, result in increased soil fertility and water conservation as well as reduced dependence on synthetic inputs.

An additional dimension of the project recognizes the importance of a sustainable market for agricultural produce. Strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, such as Tulah Wellness Retreat and Jeevani Organic Vegetable Store, provide a ready market for farmers while supporting local economies. A centralized farmer ’s market has also been established, providing an additional venue for local entrepreneurs, growers and customers.

Urban Gardens
The promotion of urban vegetable gardens has resulted in the active involvement of some 288 participants, and in turn, the enhancement of local food security and food production as well as healthy dietary options, while mitigating the environmental impact of food transportation.

Local co-operatives
The proactive formation of up to 15 farmers’ groups indicates the development of a strong and cooperative network within the agricultural community. This interconnected network facilitates resource sharing and advocacy, resulting in improved agricultural methods, heightened operational effectiveness and a stronger sense of community.
